Frequently Asked Questions

What you always wanted to know about sharpening!

NAtionally certified

master sharpener

    • Sharpening services are not regulated by the government.  Therefore, no licensing or certification is required.  Anyone with a bench grinder can offer to sharpen your shears.
    • Shear Savvy has voluntarily spent the time and money to obtain this certification to reassure you that you are getting a professionally trained and skilled sharpener.
  •
    • Shear Savvy has also obtained the most advanced and expensive equipment in the market for sharpening high quality Japanese shears.

Master Sharpener title is awarded only to a select few in the nation who score among the highest in the certification process.

This is specialized sharpening for Japanese, hand-honed, convex and beveled hair cutting shears!

Why is this important?

  • Your shears cannot be sharpened the same as a knife, saw or any other tool.
  • Convex shears have the most detailed and complicated edge in the industry.
  • Blades have to be balanced with the proper amount of bow and twist in the blade.
  • The edges have to be finely honed to allow you to use specialized techniques such as slide cutting, point cutting, etc.
  • Proprietary hardware is needed for replacing broken or lost parts on the shear.

Sharpeners who lack this training can destroy your shears beyond repair with one improper sharpening!!!

Please see our Proper vs. Improper Sharpening section for more details.

We are given training by the top sharpeners and craftsmen from Japan. After training classes, we are then given 2 shears, which have been damaged in every way possible (nicked, bent, scratched, broken parts, etc.). We are then given a short time to repair both shears to perfect working order. These shears are then critiqued on a point scoring system by 3 separate judges. There are over 20 different aspects of shear sharpening that are critiqued. Some of these are:

  • No excessive metal removal.
  • Smooth and balanced feel.
  • Blade is highly polished with no excessive blemishes.
  • Cut is smooth and does not push hair.

Proper vs Improper Sharpening

Professionals demand the thinner and more precise convex edge shear which delivers a cleaner, sharper cut and aids in slide cutting.

Many unskilled sharpeners will change a convex edge to a blunt beveled edge – “chopping” excessive metal off the blade and removing years of life from your shears.

Do your shears no longer slide cut or just push hair? Restoring a convex edge can be done!

This is a lengthy process requiring advanced skills.  This could be related to the skill and effort needed by experienced stylists who have to perform corrective coloring, when you have to go back to a base color and start over again.  There is an additional charge for restoring badly sharpened shears.

Still have questions?

We sharpen outside your salon in our Mobile Service Center.

Test drive a Mizutani!  You are welcome to use any of our shears from our sales case while we sharpen yours.

We work by appointment.  We will set up a day and time that works best for everyone in the salon.  Just give us a call (518-203-3774) or e-mail us at info@shearsavvy.com

We recommend every 4-6 months.  Servicing your shears can be likened to changing the oil in your car.  Rather than waiting for the car to begin performing poorly it is best to change the oil routinely.

  • After 4-6 months your shears will likely begin to push the hair.
  • By this time, there is also build up of hair, chemicals, rust, etc. in the screw area that cannot be seen but must be cleaned.
Not if it is done properly!  Some sharpeners can be too aggressive and remove excess metal, however we use a highly skilled honing method! Please see our Proper vs. Improper Sharpening section for more details. An average shear is designed to last approximately 5-8 years with routine sharpening.
  • No shear lasts forever despite what some salesmen may tell you.
  • Some stylists may say their shear has lasted 20 years, but how many of those years was it performing poorly before they finally serviced it?
  • Isn’t it better to have a tool that is always working at peak performance?
Yes, in most cases we can restore shears.  Please see our Proper vs. Improper Sharpening section for more details.
  • Yes, every professional has a backup.
  • You never know when your shears will take a bad drop and instantly become unusable!
  • It may take a few weeks for us to come and repair the shear.  Having a backup will prevent any interruptions to your services.
  • Getting nicks in the blade from dropping will shorten the life of your shear quickly.  To remove one bad nick could be the equivalent of 2-3 years of light sharpening.
  • If your shears have been dropped chances are high that they will need balancing.
  • A shear will loosen when it is dropped.  This can cause the shear to push or fold the hair when you cut.

We accept cash, check, credit, Venmo & Zelle.
